In January we went to see the opera Nabucco, one of the Live at the Met shows at Cineplex. It was not my favourite opera I’ve seen so far. I haven’t seen many yet though so I don’t have a whole lot to compare it to. The first half was pretty boring and the leading lady was difficult to take seriously. She had a beautiful voice but her actions were all so precise. It’s like she memorized her blocking just so and moved exactly as she had been told to move. And she kept looking for the camera and then looking directly into the camera.
The second half was better. She sang less and there was this one piece that the chorus sang that was so beautiful. They were all still the whole time and it was all done acapella. It was so well done and beautiful that the audience called for and got an encore of the whole song! The acting in the whole show was lacking, but I know that’s not the focus in an opera.
A few weeks ago we went to see Romeo et Juliet. It was directed by a director who does plays as well and I noticed a huge difference in how much more “acting” was happening in the leads and in the chorus and how much more interesting it was to watch. I’m hoping to see a few more in the next few months.
